Hey and welcome back. Any fast readers in the house? My hands stayed down, way down. I read slow; yes, I said it. It’s one of the reasons I didn’t take to reading right off the bat. The person who got me into reading (Hey Cuz) is a fast reader. She can get through a 600-page book in a day. We’d start reading at the same time, I’d be three chapters in while she would be done and chomping at the bit to discuss the book.
Embracing the Slow Read
Just to clarify, I’m not a slow reader (not like it’s a bad thing to be one), I just read slow. I’m a reveler (the get great pleasure from kind). I love savoring chapters or paragraphs or even lines like a foodie would savor a bite of something sweet or spicy with eyes closed and a moan. Anyone else read like me? I like to think of it as I read with all my senses, especially if I get an author who describes things with great detail.
When I find a chapter or paragraph I love, I read it twice or three times to relive the feeling over and over. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps. It’s like I dive into the book and become one with the character I’m reading about; seeing what they see, tasting what they taste, feeling what they feel. Sometimes I’ll finish the book and head back to the chapter or paragraph just to read it again.
Speed vs. Savor: It’s Not a Race
All this to say, don’t be discouraged if you don’t read as fast as this guy or that girl. I know there are courses online to help you ‘read faster’ and I did take some of them thinking I needed it to enhance my reading experience (it didn’t). I did that until I learned a very basic truth. It’s not a race or a competition. We all get to the end of the book (hopefully) with satisfaction (and maybe a smile) at what we experienced while we got lost in its pages. So, speed read or slow read, the most important thing is that you do read.
Wattpad Pick of the Week:
Bessa by Whiskeyqueenn (aka Rachelle Mills)
This is the first book I read cover to cover (okay second, the first took me six months to finish and I did not enjoy it). This book gave me such a thrill I still get goosebumps thinking about it. It’s a werewolf story with betrayal and love and intrigue. Rachelle Mills is a writer in a class of her own. If you are into paranormal books, check it out.
Book Says What?:
A Lady's Guide To Marvels And Misadventure By Angela Bell
Any historical fiction fans will love this book (at least I did). It is so whimsical with relatable characters and thrilling adventures. With mechanical mysteries, a young lady journeys to find her true self. It got a rating of five stars from me because it gave me giggles and goosebumps. I hope when you read it, you get to enjoy it as much as I did.
