You Are What You Read
You are what you eat. This is true. It is also true that you are what you read. I have mentioned that I love all things romance. (Goodreads confirmed this to me). Be it Christian, historical, fantasy, werewolf, cowboy, teen, dragon, highlander; it doesn’t matter, I will read it. This is not a good thing. I realized this when my reactions to people depended on what I had just read, or what I was reading at the time.
Switching Up Genres for a Richer Experience
Then I watched a video advising me to switch up what I was reading. Considering there are so many genres to choose from, I was limiting myself by only consuming one. So, I made a plan. My goal is to read a book a week which adds up to about 52 or 53 books a year. I’ll be honest, I’m a bit of an overachiever and so I have over shot that goal every year since 2020. The plan has been to read one Biography, one Classic Work, one Self-Help/Christian, and on the last week I get free reign.
The Importance of Biographies
Why this order, well, I’m glad you asked. Let’s talk biographies. Unless you’re under the age of three (this is when people say we start to remember things) (please don’t quote me on this), we all have a life story. No one in the world has lived your life therefore the best person to tell your story is you. Not even your sibling who lived in the same house can tell it like you can. I have found that reading biographies allows me to walk in the writer’s shoes. If it is well written you will cry with and for them, laugh at and with them and relate to them on a human level. They also help you gain life experiences that you haven’t had to live through.
Discovering Classic Works
Next, we have classic works. Now, depending on where in the world you come from, classic works range from Shakespeare to the Richest Man in Babylon. To me, they are any books written from the 19th century backwards. Goodreads has a list of 1804 of these books. I’m sure its not an exhaustive list. I feel it is important to gain a little culture in this life. These books contain so much rich historical content that culture can’t help but rub off on you. And if culture is not your jam, they teach you how to and how not to write. From character description and relatability to scene setting, these books are rich in knowledge.
Benefits of Self-Help and Christian Books
Finally, Self-Help or Christian books. I don’t like how making mistakes makes me feel, so if I can learn from someone else’s, why not. And studying (depending on what you’re studying) can be boring. This is why I love this genre. I get a summarized list of do and don’t from very experienced people. Things ranging from what order to read your Bible in to how to pack a suitcase. Principles that, if I’m honest, would have taken me years to come up with on my own are neatly packaged in a day or two or three of reading material (some easy to implement some not so much). The question is how badly to you want to change whatever it is you feel is holding you back from living your best life…
Free Reign: A Reader’s Delight
Lastly, my favorite week (or two if the month has five weeks) free reign. I put this last because it motivates me to finish the other books so I can get to it. This is where my romance books come in, although these days I do find myself reading thrillers or mysteries instead of romance sometimes (growth).
Anyhoo, whatever you chose to read in whatever order you read it, have a blast as you grow your knowledge in love, life and sometimes useless information.
Wattpad Pick of the Week:
Talon the Black (DragonwallSeries #1) by addicted2dragons (Melissa Mitchell)
I have to be honest… I love this book, okay the whole series, (I read the first four books in a week). The twists and turns and the will they, won’t they had me at the edge of my seat the whole time. I know Melissa is still in the process of writing so I have had to take a break but I am waiting with baited breath for the sixth installment to be complete. Let me know what you think of it.
Book Says What?:
15 Secrets Successful People Know AboutTime Management by Kevin E. Kruse
I know, the title is not short but the book is. It is about 206 pages of practical ideas on how to save the one thing we cannot get more of… TIME. I tried one principle at a time (I didn’t get all of them done), but what I did do has managed to save me a lot. I think it is worth the time spent reading it.
On Blast...: Celebrating Our Community
This week I’d like to put everyone who has taken the time to come on this adventure with me on blast. I have received 50 views. I know it may not seem like a lot but to me it means the world. Thank you so much. I hope what you read is helpful.
Thank you for spending time with me. Until our next bookish adventure…😜
